Earlier this month, U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) announced a bill that would require automatic notifications of driver violations to school districts as well as school bus companies within 24 hours. This would allow the organizations to take faster actions. The bill was written in response to New Jersey crash in May that killed a teacher and a student.

Following the investigation of two 2016 multi fatality crashes involving school buses, the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that all new buses be equipped with lap and shoulder seat belts. The organization is also calling for better driver oversight.

The new requirement regulates a necessary view behind a vehicle. The field of view extended area is a 10-foot by 20-foot space directly behind the vehicle. I’ve written about my own personal experience with the dangers of drowsy driving before. It is a dangerous epidemic that cannot be ignored. After analyzing dashboard videos from 700 accidents, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 9.5% of all crashes involved drowsy driving, based on the portion of time the operators' eyes were closed in the minutes before a crash.
