These 4 Bridges Are Some Of The Scariest In America

Though necessary pieces of infrastructure, many bridges have features that are just plain dangerous to drivers, especially novices.

Here are 4 of the scariest:

Fuller Warren Bridge

While it does run through one of the more accident-prone highways in America, the I-95, the bridge itself saw over 280 accidents in one year (2015). With 150,000 cars a day passing through it, a death approximately every two miles, and around 48 people dying every year, the busy bridge is definitely one to proceed with caution on.

The Mackinac Bridge

Imagine a bridge so imposing that there’s a state agency to help fearful drivers across it; that’s Michigan’s Mackinac Bridge. If the 5 miles and 200 feet height above the Mackinac Strait doesn’t scare you, then brutal winds, ice falling from cables, and whiteout conditions during winter will. Our first recommendation for crossing it would be to just avoid it, but if you can’t, then at least arm yourself with the right weather-proof system to cover your back.

Astoria-Megler Bridge

Where the Columbia River meets the Pacific in Oregon is where this bridge is, and if you know anything about the extreme winds and currents in this area, then you know why this bridge made the list. The gusts (up to 150 in some cases) can get so extreme that they’re known for toppling big rigs over. Avoid or use serious caution when crossing, whether you’re in a tractor-trailer or a sedan.

The George Washington Bridge

Okay, there aren’t any super hard wind gusts or rogue waves waiting to engulf your vehicle, but the stats speak for themselves: there are over 100 crashes every year involving cars getting on or off the bridge. With more than 300,000 vehicles crossing this bridge a year and some of the worst traffic in the world, the GWB has earned this spot. We definitely recommend a good set of eyes all around the vehicle for this slow, congested beast.
