We all know distracted driving kills. According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,450 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes involving distracted drivers in 2016. During daylight hours, about 481,000 drivers use cell phones while driving.

Most states have banned texting while driving, see graphic below. Novice drivers are banned from texting in Arizona and Missouri. There is no ban in Montana. Get with the program Montana!

New Georgia Law

A new Georgia distracted driving law, which bans the use of a phone while operating a motor vehicle, went into effect on July 1...

In Georgia and South Carolina, drivers can now get a DUI for drowsy driving. Because there is no test to to determine the sleepiness of a driver, it is up to the discretion of the officer whether to cite a DUI. A field test will determine if driver drowsiness is a factor in diminished driving ability.

The NSF's Sleep in America poll found when "driving drowsy, 42 percent of those polled said they become stressed, 32 percent get impatient and 12 percent tend to drive faster."

Earlier this month, U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) announced a bill that would require automatic notifications of driver violations to school districts as well as school bus companies within 24 hours. This would allow the organizations to take faster actions. The bill was written in response to New Jersey crash in May that killed a teacher and a student.

Hot car deaths already on the rise in 2018. 7 children have already lost their lives due to vehicular heatstroke. It only takes 30 minutes sitting in 75 degree temperatures to warm up the inside of a car to over 100 degrees.

According to noheatstroke.org, 749 children have died due to pediatric vehicular heatstroke since 1998.

FMVSS 111

The new requirement regulates a necessary view behind a vehicle. The field of view extended area is a 10-foot by 20-foot space directly behind the vehicle. The rule applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of under 10,000 pounds, with phase-in effective May 2017 and full compliance required May 1^st, 2018.

Accidents with industrial heavy duty commercial vehicles are dangerous and expensive. The last count by the Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries (CFOI) conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), over 4,600 fatal work injuries were recorded in the United States. Tesla's "Santa Mode" Easter egg is the latest holiday surprise from Elon Musk. Press the reindeer button to change your car into Santa's sleigh on the dash display. Other cars on the road become reindeer.

Santa mode also plays Chuck Berry's version of "Run Rudolph Run" when it first turns on. Turn signals will signal sleigh bells. The road ahead will appear icy fro cars with autopilot.

The feature can also be voice-activated. Press and hold the car's voice command button and say "Ho Ho Ho".

For many the holiday season is about spending time with family and friends.
