Tales of the Road, a leading road safety organization based in the United Kingdom, has recently released a series of three videos containing safety tips for children that are designed to help curb the number of traffic related fatalities that happen across the country each year.

According to road safety statistics that were recently released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, we may be well on our way to having completely safe roads for drivers and pedestrians in our lifetime. According to a new report, auto related fatalities have significantly declined in 2014 compared to the same period in 2013.
According to the NHTSA, the total number of traffic fatalities in 2014 was 32,675, compared to the number of 32,719 in 2013. While this itself is good, the rest of the report isn't quite as optimistic and points to the fact that there is still very real work...

Whether it’s a fender-bender, dingy or a car-totaling crash, any automotive accident is frustrating. All have the potential to damage the body and physical property. Some can be life-altering and fatal. While you can’t control the actions of other drivers on the road, there are some things you can do to decrease your odds of being in an accident.
Here are five proven techniques to do just that:
- Drive defensively. That means using awareness on the road. Scan the road at least 25 feet ahead to better anticipate changes in traffic flow. Look out for pedestrians in marked crosswalks and between parked...

This year is on pace to be a record-breaking one for auto recalls. The record was set last year, which saw 64 million vehicles recalled for safety problems. That number is shaping up to be easily surpassed by the end of 2015.
This year’s recalls are spearheaded by the largest recall in American automotive history: the 34-million-vehicle recall of automobiles with airbags from the Japanese company Takata, one of the world’s largest airbag suppliers. The vehicles were recalled for defective airbags, and they represent about in every seven cars on the road in the...

We couldn't help ourselves with this post, what are your thoughts on Google's Self-Driving Cars?
"Driving too slowly? Bet humans don’t get pulled over for that too often.
We’ve capped the speed of our prototype vehicles at 25mph for safety reasons. We want them to feel friendly and approachable, rather than zooming scarily through neighborhood streets.
Like this officer, people sometimes flag us down when they want to know more about our project. After 1.2 million miles of autonomous driving (that’s the human equivalent of 90 years of driving experience), we’re proud to say we’ve never been...

Many people believe that road safety as a concept begins and ends with drivers. While it's true that protecting the lives of innocent people from auto accidents or injury is important, it is also only one small part of a much larger whole. Drivers aren't the only people on the road at any given moment - there are pedestrians out for a walk, bicyclists on their way to work and even small children who just want to get to school so that they can see friends and learn about their favorite subjects. Every day, more than 500 children around the world lose their lives in traffic crashes. It is exactly...

The World Health Organization recently released its 2015 State of Global Road Safety Report which, as its name suggests, outlines both the progress that has been made and the work that still needs to be done around the world to increase road safety for everyone involved. It's always important to remember that road safety doesn't just mean keeping drivers safe from one another - it also means paying attention to pedestrians, cyclists, motorcycle riders and more at the same time.

A few weeks ago, the Governors Highway Safety Association released a new study: Drug-Impaired Driving: A Guide for What States Can Do.
This new report from the organization, summarizes the current state of knowledge of drug use by drivers on America’s roadway and identifies actions that states and other stakeholders can take to detect and prevent drug-impaired driving.
From the study, we see some interesting data related to drugged driving in fatal crashes, compared to drinking and driving.
The best data come from fatal crashes because drivers in fatal crashes, especially fatally-injured drivers...

Today on the White House website, Michael J. Fox reflects on how far we’ve come toward cures for brain disease in the 30 years since the Back to the Future trilogy debuted — and what’s possible in the next 30.
We’ve come a long way since 1985.
When Marty McFly and Doc Brown traveled thirty years into the future, we could only imagine the innovations we take for granted today -- new ideas and technologies that have completely changed the way we live, learn, and work.
Back then, if you’d told me that I’d go from talking on a cell phone to talking...

According to the GHSA, nearly 30 Americans die every single day due to alchahol-related car accidents. That adds up to around 10,000 fatalities per year. Those in their early twenties are at especially high risk, and account for a third of the deaths.
Traditionally, driving under the influence has been combated by advertising campaigns, DUI checkpoints, and a variety of educational resources. Now, with the advent of new technology, there are even more options available. There are quite a few great apps which can help prevent these deadly accidents from...

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. — Google, a leader in efforts to create driverless cars, has run into an odd safety conundrum: humans.
Last month, as one of Google’s self-driving cars approached a crosswalk, it did what it was supposed to do when it slowed to allow a pedestrian to cross, prompting its “safety driver” to apply the brakes. The pedestrian was fine, but not so much Google’s car, which was hit from behind by a human-driven sedan.
Google’s fleet of autonomous test cars is programmed to follow the letter...

The truth behind the traffic accident statistics
To give you an idea of how dangerous traffic accidents can be, in the time it took me to write this story, 3121 people were killed in a car accident and 80,889 were injured. The rate of fatalities and serious injuries in traffic accidents is so high that getting in a car is one of the most dangerous things a human being can do in their lifetime.
It’s among the top 10 killers of human beings in the world. Car accidents are responsible for more deaths each day than any wild beast or natural catastrophe.
Car accidents kill more people than wars do...

The Federal Highway Administration wants to clear the air: Yes, state and local transportation agencies should use federal money to construct high-quality biking and walking infrastructure.
State and local DOTs deploy an array of excuses to avoid building designs like protected bike lanes. “It’s not in the manual” is a favorite. So is “the feds won’t fund that.”
Whether these excuses are cynical or sincere, FHWA wants you to know that they’re bogus.
Last week, the agency released a “clarifying” document that shoots down, on the record, some of the common refrains people hear from their...

Senator pushes bill to speed up ignition lock research
By Paula Katinas
Brooklyn Daily Eagle
Someday, a drunk person won’t be able to drive a car because the car won’t start. U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer said he wants someday to be here soon.
Schumer (D-New York) is pushing legislation called the ROADS SAFE Act that would speed up the development of technology to prevent drunk drivers from operating a car. The technology would disable a car’s ignition if the driver is found to be above the legal blood alcohol limit. It works with the use of sensors inside the auto that are equipped with touch or non-invasive...

When it comes to the future of transportation, the first thing that comes to mind is the possibility of flying cars. It's easy to imagine an urban utopia with vehicles that float through the air, swerving around buildings, reaching toward the heavens.
While Back to the Future: Part II wrongly predicted that we would have this technology in 2015, autonomous vehicles—which are currently being tested—may just be the stepping stone to making this a reality. Who would've thought robot cars would be our present?
No matter what side you stand on in the safety debate, even those who have concerns still...
