autumn 2001 in Topeka, KS. I’m standing in the driveway. The first day of high
school carpool. My best friend Dale lives a few miles down the road, his sister’s
friend Cecilia is going to drive us and his sister Stephanie to and from school
each day. My house, Dale/Stephanie’s house, and Topeka High were all on the
same road. The Midwest, right? Cecilia always opts to double back down 10th
to take I-70 instead of 10th all the way to school. “Less traffic, no lights, I can drive a lot
faster,” she explains. Looking back, I think the difference was minuscule, it

I’ve written about my own personal experience with the dangers of drowsy driving before. This dangerous epidemic that cannot be ignored. After analyzing dashboard videos from 700 accidents, the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that 9.5% of all crashes involved drowsy driving, based on the portion of time the operators' eyes were closed in the minutes before a crash. This statistic grows to nearly 11% in severe crashes.
