My parents bought a new (to them) car last November. My mom was very pumped about the included backup and side camera.
"It has grid lines when you back up! The cameras change when I use my turn signal!" She happily exclaimed after she brought it home. When I came back to Kansas for Christmas, she proudly showed me how everything worked.
Many new vehicles now come standard with backup and/or side cameras. It makes sense. Laws are changing, and the new generation are learning to drive with cameras. The question remains, how can I make my parents even safer? After hearing all about my mom's backup...

Thanks to Vision Zero, New York pedestrian deaths are the lowest since 1910. This is the first year the city began recording these deaths.
101 pedestrians were killed by vehicles in 2017, while 184 pedestrians were killed in 2013 when the initiative was first proposed by then candidate Mayor De Blasio.
Steps taken for Vision Zero include reducing speed limits, changing street corners, and adjusting cross signals.
“The lower speed limit, increased enforcement and safer street designs are all building on each other to keep New Yorkers safe,” Mr. de Blasio said in a statement. “Now we must deepen...

A friend of mine in Kansas was recently in an accident. Thankfully everyone involved is fine. The accident wasn't recorded, and now my friend's insurance is going up. Though it wasn't my friend's fault, it is a "he said, she said" situation. This headache can be avoided with a dash camera.
The Importance of Dash Cams
Designed to mount to a vehicles windshield and record everything seen out of the front of the vehicle, dash cameras are packed with different features. Find one that is right for you and your needs. Video quality, storage capacity, design, GPS options, and camera quantity are some...

Airbags are advanced enough to protect a passenger at nearly every possible angle of a crash. Hyundai and parts supplier company Hyundia Mobis are pioneering a new kind of airbag, for panoramic sunroofs.
Panoramic Sunroof Airbag
According to a video released by the company the system prevented the passenger from being flung out of the car and cushioned the impact on the head. Serious injury likely to result in the death of the passenger were reduced to minor injuries. The airbag inflates in 0.08 seconds and will go off even if the sunroof is closed. Watch the video below.

Oregon's new distracted driving law goes into effect Oct. 1st. House Bill 2597 passed earlier this year, and includes a stricter ban on phone use while driving with higher fines that quickly escalate.
https://youtu.be/rKLhqiuT7Gs
Closing Loopholes
The new law fixes a loophole in a 2009 version, which bans calls/texting, but includes nothing about navigation apps or games. The new version prohibits drives from using ANY phone function that requires holding or touching. You can use the phone to activate a preprogrammed route, but not to type in an address.
As shown below, Oregon is the 22nd state...

Drowsy driving is a major problem. According to the CDC, an estimated 1 in 25 adult drivers (18 years or older) report falling asleep while driving in the previous 30 days.
A new study from the National Safety Council concludes that 43% of Americans admit they don’t get enough sleep to mitigate safety risks at work and on the road.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving was responsible for 72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths in 2013. However, these numbers are underestimated and up to 6,000 fatal crashes each year may be caused by drowsy...

More and more large companies and lawmakers are taking distracted driving seriously. It's about time. According to NHTSA, distracted driving killed 3,477 people in 2015. A feature in Apple's iOS11 hopes to stop this trend.
The Do Not Disturb While Driving feature disables alerts when you're on the road. The feature pops up when the phone determines you're in a moving vehicle after you've used it once. You can dismiss the feature if you're just a passenger.
Your phone will auto reply to messages that you're driving. There is an option to over ride this feature in the case of an "urgent" message...

I'm going back to Kansas for my cousin's wedding this weekend and I couldn't be more excited. I get to see my entire family and spend one last time in my childhood home before my parents sell it and move to a bigger city. I'm also very pumped for the open road. As I'll be driving a lot on rural roads, here are some tips from the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau on how to share the road with farm equipment.
Safety Tips
- Don't Rush - You'll probably encounter agricultural equipment on rural roads. Give yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
- Pass With Care - If a farmer has pulled off the road...

I don't fly that often. Maybe once a year to visit home. I usually pick a super early flight and just sleep the entire way. No problem. That's why I was initially confused when I read a headline that the government may soon allow Wi-Fi connected phone calls on flights. Why would you need to make a call on an airplane? I've used Wi-Fi on a plane, but never lamented that I can't make a call while in the air. I ride the bus nearly every day, and it's very annoying when someone is on the phone. Someone is always on the phone.
After reading the story, the reason became obvious. It's for work. If you...

I’ve been in New York for about a year and a half. I’ve gotten a lot better at navigation. I can get on the train going the right direction and know when to transfer to a different train or bus. My first week in the city I got off a very crowded A Train to let people off with the intention of hoping back on. That didn’t happen. The doors closed and I ended up waiting for the next (crowded) train.
Because I live relatively close to where I work, I often ride a bike to work. Needless to say it’s very different than riding a bike in the Midwest. I stick to bike lanes and ride defensively. I wear a...

This summer is the perfect time for a long road trip, and not just because you have a new RV. According to AAA, gas prices are the lowest they’ve been since 2004. The drop is due to declining crude oil costs and abundant fuel suppliers.
Average gas prices are below $2 (2 dollars!) a gallon in seven states, including: Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri and South Carolina. In the entire United States around 1 in 4 gas stations are selling gas for less than $2 a gallon. Baring large unexpected events, such as a natural disaster or a distributor issue, it looks like this...

Close your eyes and imagine a futuristic car. What does it look like? It’s probably very sleek and aerodynamic, zipping through a modern city. This imaginary car doesn’t have rear or side view mirrors, did it? The future is closer than you think, reports Automotive News.
Mirror less vehicles, cars that are equipped with video screens instead of glass mirrors, improve safety while also raising miles per gallon. The idea has been proposed for years, but recent changes in Japanese laws have given the green light to this modern design.
