The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a fatal crash involving a Tesla Model S cruising on autopilot mode. This is the first fatal crash in a semi-autonomous car.
The Verge reports that Joshua Brown, a 40-year-old Ohio resident and Navy SEAL was killed when neither he nor the Tesla’s sensors saw a tractor trailer pulling in front of the car on a Florida highway. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured. Brown’s obituary can be found here. The crash occurred on May 7th.

While dealers selling new cars are prohibited from selling vehicles with known defects, rental companies are not legally mandated to do the same. Until now. Part of the Fixing America's Surface Transportation (FAST) Act of 2015 requires rental car agencies with fleets over 35 vehicles to fix any and all open safety defects. Pressure is on to better protect rear passengers, as ride-sharing programs such as Uber and Lyft are putting more people in the backseat. A record nine car models recorded driver death rates of zero, in a periodic study by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The group's focus on 2011 models driven through 2012 also found the overall death rate fell by more than a third from its previous study.
The new study found that when looking at 2011 models through the 2012 calendar year, driver deaths per million registered vehicle years fell to 28; just three years earlier, the driver death rate was 48.

SHREVEPORT, LA (KSLA) -Shreveport police have released the name of the 2-year-old child who was fatally injured after his mother accidentally ran him over on Thursday afternoon. And as the family grieves so too are first responders who must confront such trauma day in and day out.
The accident happened at 3:40 p.m. at a home in the 100 block of East Prospect Street. Police say 32-year-old Jennifer Peters pulled her SUV forward in her driveway and ran over 2-year-old Colton Stolzer.

Jerred Byrd Jr., a kindergartner at Leesburg Elementary, was drawing calmly with chalk on the concrete of a parking lot at 1015 McNamee St. when the 3,917-pound car hit him and pulled him under the wheels, breaking both of his legs.
