When I was growing up the holidays meant a lot of travel. My family, like 107 million Americans, traveled from Dec. 23 - Jan 1. Having 3 older brothers, it was always a magic trick getting our large family into a car in any kind of timely fashion. We spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with family in Kansas City, about an hour away from home in Topeka. I fondly recall traveling to see the KC plaza lights on Thanksgiving night or falling asleep in the car on the way home from the Christmas Eve party and waking up in my bed on christmas morning.

My idea of winter driving was to warming my Subaru sedan up, leaving early and driving slow/defensively. While the two later latter points are valid, I learned later that heating up the car is not a good idea. I also learned more about winter tires.
Winter Tires
Growing up in the Midwest I definitely heard of winter tires, but had never used them. According to the Traffic Injury Safety Foundation, certain types of these tires can impact braking distance by up to 25 percent. This distance could be the difference between a close call and an accident, which is huge. In adverse winter conditions...

Electric scooters haven't made it to New York yet. While I was visiting friends in DC I rode a Lime, or maybe it was a Bird. It was a lot of fun, I zipped around for a few minutes, it was very easy to use and control. One issue was that I was unsure where to place it at the end of my ride. Eventually I put it next to a crowded bike rack, but I could see too many scooters getting out of hand. That said, I would use this everyday for my 2.1 mile commute. That may come sooner than later. Ford has purchased San Francisco-based scooter sharing company Spin.

Earlier this month, U.S. Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) announced a bill that would require automatic notifications of driver violations to school districts as well as school bus companies within 24 hours. This would allow the organizations to take faster actions. The bill was written in response to New Jersey crash in May that killed a teacher and a student.
“Miranda’s Law,” is being proposed to help support the SECURES Act, which would make lap-shoulder seat belts the nationwide standard for school buses. The bill would require a nationwide employer notification service for buses. This would give...

I've written about America's infrastructure before. Domino's wants to help, because it's affecting their pizza.
"Have you ever hit a pothole and instantly cringed? We know that feeling is heightened when you're bringing home a carryout order from your local Domino's store. We don't want to lose any great-tasting pizza to a pothole, ruining a wonderful meal," said Russell Weiner, president of Domino's USA. "Domino's cares too much about its customers and pizza to let that happen."

Following the investigation of two 2016 multi fatality crashes involving school buses, the National Transportation Safety Board has recommended that all new buses be equipped with lap and shoulder seat belts. The organization is also calling for better driver oversight.
Enough is Enough
"I feel like we've always tiptoed around this issue of seat belt usage and lap [and] shoulder belts in school buses," said NTSB Board Chairman Robert L. Sumwalt. "The last recommendation we made on this was in 2013 coming out of a crash in Chesterfield, New Jersey, that occurred in February of 2012. And it was a...

Remember in the old days when you had to actually use the rearview mirror to see behind your vehicle? And if that didn’t give you the view that you needed, you could always crane your neck and physically look back. Well, those days are over since we can now buy vehicle accessories to see what’s behind our vehicle. And having a better view of what’s going on back there saves lives.

May's product of the month was designed with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 regulation in mind. We want to help you become compliant with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 111 law.
FMVSS 111
The new requirement regulates a necessary view behind a vehicle. The field of view extended area is a 10-foot by 20-foot space directly behind the vehicle. The rule applies to vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of under 10,000 pounds, with phase-in effective May 2017 and full compliance required May 1st, 2018.
