Informing young drivers of the risks of driving intoxicated along with teaching proper precautions can also save many lives among young drivers.

In areas prone to snow, It is very important for all drivers to get their vehicles tuned up before winter. Shovels, tow and tire chains, and bags of salt are also essential for driving in winter conditions. In case of rain and flash floods it is ideal to make sure your windshield wipers are always in top shape. Having a rain repellent in your vehicle is also an affordable and easy way to increase safety. For all extreme weather it is important to make sure you are aware of any problems with your vehicle and address them as soon as possible. Tire pressure should be frequently checked, and it is recommended that all drivers carry road maps, a tool kit, and at least one flashlight at all times.

  • How Long Do I Need To Wait To Drive After Drinking Alcohol?

Although accidents related to intoxicated driving appear to be decreasing in recent years (down 85 % from 1979 in 2012), it is very important to be responsible and informed.  Approximately three 12 Ounce beers (that’s roughly fifteen ounces of table wine and four and a half ounces of hard liquor) will put you over the legal limit of .08%.

It is generally suggested that for every one drink a driver should wait an hour before reentering his/her vehicle. That being said, the SAAQ suggests waiting even longer than that, stating that your liver will lower BAC levels by 15 mg/hour. .02 = 20 mg so that’s one and a third hours or an hour and twenty minutes. The only way to truly be safe is to drive with a 0.00 BAC at all times. Do not drink and drive, ever.

Using a cell phone without a hands-free Bluetooth system connected can be fatal while operating a vehicle. It is believed that using a cell phone while driving has the same effect as driving with a .08 Blood Alcohol Content.  18 % of all fatal road accidents are caused by cell phone usage, especially among those who are using their phone to send text messages.
