Transportation Accidents Remain Most Common Work Fatality

According to recent data from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, 5,190 fatal work injuries occurred in 2016. This is a 7% increase from 2015. This is the third year in a row this number has increased.

At 40% (2,083) of the fatalities, transportation accidents remained the most common cause of work deaths. Violence committed by people or animals and On-the-job overdoses from non-medical use of drugs or alcohol are also high on the list.

National Safety Council

In response to this data, The National Safety Council is urging employers to take a systematic approach to this problem.

"Leadership should set the tone from the top and engage all workers in safety, continually looking to identify and mitigate workplace safety hazards and measuring safety performance using leading indicators to ensure continuous improvement,” NSC said in a statement.

NSC offers resources to help employers improve their safety performance and keep their workers safe. This includes a free Safe Driving Kit and Prescription Drug Employer Toolkit.

Every worker deserves a safe work environment.
