The Dreaded Call

Last week while we were in Kansas, Kelly got the dreaded phone call. Her friend Janis called from the hospital to say she had gotten hit by a car while walking to work. She didn’t have any serious injuries but her back was hurt and she was understandable very shaken. It was early, and the driver didn’t see Janis and hit her while he was turning.

Now that we’re back in town we’re going to visit Janis. She left the hospital, but is taking another week off work.

Hearing this news just made me feel helpless. We sent flowers, called to check in, and offered moral support, but the feeling wasn’t going away. My mind kept floating to “what it?” What if the car had been going faster? What if she had slept a littler later that day? What if it was Kelly instead of Janis?

But we can’t feel helpless all the time, because we’re not. Janis will eventually take that same route and is excited to eventually get back to work. We all do everything we can to keep our friends and family safe. Janis is part of our New York family and we will always do everything we can to help protect her. Here are some tips for pedestrian safety from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
