7 GREAT APPS TO HELP COMBAT DRUNK DRIVING

Written by bcadmin on

According to the GHSA, nearly 30 Americans die every single day due to alchahol-related car accidents. That adds up to around 10,000 fatalities per year. Those in their early twenties are at especially high risk, and account for a third of the deaths.

Traditionally, driving under the influence has been combated by advertising campaigns, DUI checkpoints, and a variety of educational resources. Now, with the advent of new technology, there are even more options available. There are quite a few great apps which can help prevent these deadly accidents from happening.

EnDUI

The free app EnDUI (End DUI)is designed to help you know whether or not you’re too intoxicated to drive. It calculates your BAC when you input your body factors and what you’ve had to drink, letting you know approximately how much alcohol you have in your system. Even if you’re below the legal limit you may be too tipsy to drive, so it also has games for you to play which test your ability to focus. Find it here for Androids and here for iOS devices.

Breathometer

This free app works with a device (purchased separately) to read your blood alcohol level when you breath into the device. It also tells you how long it will be before your BAC returns to zero. Available for iOS and Android.

Alcohoot

Like the Breathometer, this is an app-and-device combo. Alcohoot is a free app for both Android and iOS, but the device is more expensive than their competitors. However, it generally receives better reviews and is often considered to be more accurate.

DrinkTracker

Just like the name suggests, DrinkTracker is a $2 iOS app which allows you to track your drinking. The app estimates your BAC and displays it in real time. You can also set a target BAC and the app will alert you once your BAC has reached that level. The app also has resources to help you get home, connecting with maps to give you directions or with your contacts to let a trusted friend help you out.

SoberApp

This app is very similar to DrinkTracker, but it’s a free Android version. It also allows you to estimate your BAC, and will help you find a taxi if you need transportation. The app also features a long list a drinks, which allows you to be more specific about what you’ve had to drink.

Have A Plan

This free app is available for Apple iOSAndroid, and Windows Phones. It allows to you plan ahead who you’ll need to call if you can’t drive, as well as calculate your BAC and play reflex-testing games. The app also allows you to report a DWI.

SaferRide

This app is designed to help those who are intoxicated get a safe ride by contacting their friends. The app also shows their location and offers a way to get a taxi. Available free for iOS and Android.

With more and more young people relying on technology, it simply makes sense to use apps to help them drink responsibly. With a variety of options available, it’s easy to find an app which suits every person’s needs and preferences, allowing them to stay safe and legal.

A word of caution, however: before you use any of these apps, it’s important to remember that no app can definitively tell you whether or not you can safely drive. Because every person reacts differently to alcohol, it may be that your BAC is legal for driving, but still not truly safe. If there is any doubt about sobriety or driving ability, call a friend or taxi. Remember to drink responsibly.
